To celebrate 10 years of Cardiff & Vale Health Charity helping make things better for both our staff and patients, they will be holding a special SuperMegaDraw in December 2020 awarding one lucky winner £20,000!

Entry into the Staff Lottery is automatically deducted from a member’s payroll and each entry costs £1 per week. Once you are part of the Staff Lottery you are given an allocated unique number and the winning number is generated at random by computer.

The Staff Lottery also enables staff to apply for funding via the Health Charity’s Staff Lottery Fast Track Scheme and from the Staff Lottery Bids Panel, which has recently awarded grants of over £1.5 million to support numerous projects across the UHB. These projects can range from refurbishing staff and waiting rooms, enabling staff to attend training to continue their professional development and funding novel medical equipment to benefit a variety of patients. Staff can apply for funding of up to £250 via the Fast Track Scheme and bids between £250 and £10,000 can be applied for via the Staff Lottery Bids Panel.

An example of a successful application submitted to the Staff Lottery Bids Panel for consideration at the latest meeting in August 2019 can be seen below;

Enhancing women’s experience of maternity care at the University Hospital of Wales through the use of Virtual Reality.

As part of the Children & Women’s Clinical Board, the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) submitted an application to the Staff Lottery Bids Panel for consideration. Funding was required to develop a series of short films, utilising Virtual Reality (VR) to support women coming into UHW to have their babies.

The first of its kind hospital project in the UK consists of three separate parts. The first is to create a 2D 360 degree virtual tour of all areas within maternity for all members of the public to view on their computer/smartphone. Secondly, the creation of a 360 degree virtual tour of intrapartum areas for women who have had a previous traumatic birth. Lastly, the creation of a virtual induction of labour video to support women through this process and enable them to ‘see’ what happens to their bodies whilst undergoing induction. The Bids Panel noted that this was a good example of where charitable money should be spent and thus approved the bid.

Suzanne Hardacre, Head of Midwifery and the individual who applied to the panel said “We have never done anything like this in maternity services before. This is a really exciting and innovative project, bringing another dimension to the care we can give to women. It has the ability to take women to a place where they can be distracted from their early labour pain and offering another, non-pharmaceutical aspect of pain relief can only be seen as a positive.”

The Bids Panel were happy to approve this bid as the use of VR will provide a unique, informative and valuable opportunity to engage all service users so that both patient experience and care are improved as a result. Evidence has also suggested that using Virtual Reality for post-traumatic stress can be helpful for people to overcome past events. The Bids Panel recognise the importance of looking after our patients’ physical and mental health and wellbeing and are therefore happy to support this project which will help achieve this.
