In December 2020, Cardiff & Vale Health Charity celebrated 10 years of making things better for patients, visitors, staff and the wider community.
The Health Charity had planned to hold a 10 year celebration event, looking back at the major projects it has funded and celebrating the contributions of their donors, fundraisers, volunteers and community partners during the past decade. Unfortunately, due to Coronavirus these plans were cancelled. Instead, the Health Charity will be taking a look back at how its fundraisers, donors, volunteers and community partners have helped to change things for the better over the past ten years.
Here are just some of the activities and events held by the Health Charity, supporters and fundraisers in 2014.
February – Cardiff University Health and Science students did a spot of fundraising with buckets of enthusiasm for the Health Charity at a Cardiff Blues match against Leinster. The funds they raised went towards the Make it Better fund, which identifies areas of healthcare which are most in need of support. In 2014 the Make it Better fund was able to support the Stroke Unit at Llandough and helped with the development of a new facility at the Cardiff and Vale Breast Centre.
March – The sad passing of Stan Stennett in November 2013 at the age of 88 brought to an end some seventy years of entertaining by the Cardiff-based star. In St. David’s Hall, Cardiff, a “Remembering Stan Stennett” tribute show took place, reflecting on the life of one of Wales best loved entertainers. The show was in aid of the Stroke fund to support acute and rehabilitation stroke services at the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough, part of Cardiff and Vale Health Charity.
July – Karl Stokes took on the Marlow Half Iron Distance Triathlon to raise vital funds for the Children’s Heart Unit which is based at the University Hospital for Wales. He wanted to raise funds for the unit as they did such a fantastic job looking after his son Louie, who is a real inspiration.
August – Kate Horgan raised a fantastic £12,312.89 through fundraising events over the past couple of years. Funds have been added to the Children’s General Purpose Fund at the University Hospital of Wales.
October – Shaun Davies ran the Berlin Marathon in an impressive 4hours 26minutes in aid of the Neo-Natal Fund.
Phase Two of The Breast Centre at University Hospital Llandough officially opened. The Breast Centre Appeal continues to raise funds for equipment to provide extra services to benefit patients who are being treated for breast problems.
November – Members of the Finance team based at the University Hospital of Wales organised a Charity football match against Welsh Government in aid of the Make It Better Fund which supports projects across all of the hospitals, health centres and community teams that are nominated by staff or identified as areas that need priority funding, with over £155 raised.
December – The Breast Centre Appeal’s Annual Pink Tie Ball took place at the prestigious City Hall in Cardiff. The glamorous event was attended by the Breast Centre Appeal’s patron Julien MacDonald.
