Karen Wakefield is a physiotherapy technical instructor who works at the University Hospital of Wales on ward C6 which is a Frame Medical Rehabilitation ward.
Karen is taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise money for additional exercise and therapy equipment, as well as helping towards the refurbishment of the ward’s quiet room.
Karen said: “I am a physiotherapy technical instructor who works with a small team of physiotherapists to rehabilitate our patients to a suitable standard for them to be discharged home.
“I run regular exercise groups where I take pairs of patients into our therapy room to participate in exercise and fun games as part of their physiotherapy treatment.
“I decided to try and raise money to buy exercise and therapy equipment such as soft balls, bean bags, suitable weights and other games for the patients to play with to allow me to continue these sessions and vary the exercises that we do.
“I hope to also contribute to the refurbishment and decoration of the ‘Quiet room’ should I raise enough in sponsorship.
“I started my fundraising back in July and ran the first of three events in August, the Barry Island 10k. I ran the Cardiff 10k on Sunday 2nd September and I intend to complete the Cardiff Half Marathon in October.”
