Good luck and thank you to Nikki Lacey who has decided to run 47km throughout the month of October to raise funds for the Breast Centre Appeal!

Nikki, a mother of four from Penarth, worked for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board for many years as a midwife and is now a Midwifery Lecturer at Cardiff University (but still on the Midwife bank!).  10 years ago in October 2010, Nikki celebrated her 37th birthday but a few weeks later, was unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer.  Nikki went on to have a double mastectomy and 6 months of chemotherapy followed by a number of other operations over the next few years.

At the time of diagnosis Nikki’s four children were aged between 3 and 11, she says “it was a difficult time both physically and emotionally.   I had surgery, chemotherapy and more surgery over the next few years. Each time I was cared for by the fantastic team at the Breast Centre in Llandough Hospital. They looked after me but they also cared for my family”.

Trained as a health professional herself, Nikki said that the care and support she received from the team at the Breast Centre based at the University Hospital Llandough (UHL) was excellent and really helped her during a truly difficult time. 10 years on and to celebrate her 47th birthday, Nikki wanted to give something back to the team who treated her so well, and so has decided to run 47km throughout the month of October. She said “I’m not a runner so it’s taking me all month to reach the 47k but will be well worth the effort for such a good cause”.

Nikki will be fundraising for the Breast Centre Appeal, which supports both patients and staff of the Breast Centre at UHL whilst also running for her family, in memory of some special friends and raising awareness of breast cancer in young women. So far, Nikki has raised an amazing £1,217.50 via her JustGiving page and its increasing day by dayNikki will be fundraising for the Breast Centre Appeal, which supports both patients and staff of the Breast Centre at UHL whilst also running for her family, in memory of some special friends and raising awareness of breast cancer in young women.
