Critical Care staff at the University Hospital of Wales now have a relaxing space to take a well-deserved break from the wards thanks to a generous donation from Stagecoach in South Wales through Cardiff & Vale Health Charity.

Last year, Stagecoach in South Wales thanked its customers across the country for helping to raise more than £28,646.29 for Cardiff & Vale Health Charity’s Covid-19 Appeal.

At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Stagecoach introduced an exact fare policy, which is still ongoing as a safety measure, with many of its bus services to reduce the handling of cash. Customers were advised that any excess payment received as a result of not giving change would be donated to Cardiff and Vale Health Charity as part of the NHS charities together COVID-19 appeal which supports the valuable work of NHS employees.

When the Health Board’s Capital, Estates and Facilities Team had completed construction of the area, funds from Stagecoach were used to furnish the area.  The break room is now a larger space, with smart new furniture, comfortable seating and tasteful decoration.  Artwork will also be installed on the walls to bring an added sense of calm.  Poppi Furniture have helped in transforming the space.

Sarah Lloyd, Interim General Manager for Critical Care and Major Trauma said: “I’d like to thank Stagecoach for funding the transformation of the break room on critical care.  It makes such a huge difference to have a dedicated area for our staff to take time out from the ward, especially at such a challenging time.  The colours of the furniture and decoration really help the area to feel calm and relaxing.  I’d also like to say thank you to our Capital, Estates and Facilities Team for creating the space for us to use for this facility.  It really is appreciated.”

Nigel Winter, Managing Director for Stagecoach in South Wales, said: “We would like to thank our customers for their help in raising such a fantastic amount for this worthy charity. We’re very proud of the incredible job that the NHS and key workers, including our own employees, are continuing to do and are pleased that this donation will be going towards the refurbishment of the rooms in the critical care unit at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

“Over the last year, we’ve all had to make changes to the way we live and travel to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. Many people have found it easy and convenient to pay for their journey using contactless, mobile or online and we would encourage our customers to continue to do so where possible.”
