The staff room in the Emergency Unit at the University Hospital of Wales has recently been updated thanks to funds from Cardiff & Vale Health Charity’s Make It Better Fund.

The staff room was looking tired and in need of a good freshen up with redecoration and renovation in the area.  Funds from Cardiff & Vale Health Charity enabled the area to be redecorated with help from the Health Board’s Capital, Estates and Facilities Team.

As part of the renovation of the area, new artwork was provided for the unit.  Local artist Nathan Wyburn created a stunning collage, with hundreds of photos of the Emergency Unit staff formed it into the shape of a dragon.

Staff from the Emergency Unit are a close-knit team, on a daily basis they are the front door to the hospital.  They regularly face extremely challenging times, especially so during the past 18 months and by the nature of the work they do, they are often in unimaginable situations.  The artwork shows the team of many faces, brought together as one image of strength and courage.

Laura Jones, Sister in the Emergency Unit at the University Hospital of Wales said: “We chose the image of a dragon as we wear the dragon as part of our uniform, it’s with us every day and it really symbolises the strength, determination and courage that staff in the EU have in order to deal with the challenges they face.

“I’d like to thank Cardiff & Vale Health Charity for helping with this project and a big thank you to Nathan Wyburn for creating this fantastic image which means so much to us all.”
