Cardiff & Vale Health Charity is pleased to announce Christy Villaruz, Senior Staff Nurse, has been crowned Health Hero for May.

Christy is a Senior Staff Nurse within Critical Care at University Hospital of Wales, and in addition to her clinical responsibilities, Christy is an influential and key member of the Critical Care Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team.

Critical Care Quality and Safety Nursing Lead, Hayley Valentine said, “Christy empowers all staff in the unit with knowledge and advice on IPC issues. She has undertaken audits, teaching sessions and implemented change to the unit all in her stride with a smile on her face. She is passionate and an inspiration to all.”

Christy is one of the main contributors in the IPC team, particularly around the hand hygiene campaign, and even designed posters for World Hand Hygiene day. For the campaign, Christy enlisted staff members, and performed teachings using the UV light which highlighted common areas that are missed when washing hands.

Team Leader and IPC Lead, Jayne Kent said, “Promoting IPC in such a large area as the Critical Care department is difficult. Having Christy in the team and knowing that I can leave such a large part of education in Christy’s capable hands is invaluable to me. She is an inspiration and role model to the junior members of the team.”

Christy will be Health Hero for the month of May and will receive a treat from sponsors Park Plaza Cardiff. She is delighted with the award nomination.

The Health Hero Award is supported by Cardiff & Vale Health Charity and Park Plaza Cardiff.
