The family of a patient who received treatment on the Critical Care ward at University Hospital of Wales have raised over £1,140 for Cardiff & Vale Health Charity.

Mark Goodall affectionately known as Charlie, was admitted to UHW on Thursday 9th January 2020 after a sudden collapse at home.

He was diagnosed with a brain bleed and had brain surgery resulting in him being put into an induced coma to recover.

During this period, he contracted sepsis, which led to kidney failure and ultimately to his sad passing on 20th January age 42, 2 days before his 43rd birthday.

Charlie’s cousin, Sarah Bourne says “Charlie worked at the Dental Hospital in the admin records team and he absolutely loved his job. He was also an avid Manchester United supporter.  As a family we witnessed the tireless work that the nurses and doctors do on Critical Care and how even when he was in a coma, they would speak to him before each and every procedure”.

The team there are amazing and well worth their weight in gold.  The family asked for donations in lieu of flowers to honour Charlie’s memory and say thank you to the ward that tried their utmost to save him”.

A huge thank you to HSBC UK for intermediaries who matched the donations, taking the total to £1,140.

Judith Burnett, Interim Senior Nurse says “Thank you so much to all the family and HSBC for supporting us at this incredibly sad and difficult time. Their generous donation will help us continue to provide enhanced equipment, research, treatment and patient care, all over and above NHS funding for other seriously ill patients in future. On behalf of everyone involved in critical care team, and the many people who will benefit from your kindness, thank you all very much indeed once again”.
