Thanks to the generosity of Health Charity supporters, patients across University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough are experiencing brighter days during their hospital stay through an innovative and compassionate initiative: the Digital Library Trolley.

Originally, the trolley had a very different purpose. Once used by the Royal Voluntary Service, it was left behind when services changed following the Covid pandemic. Rather than letting these resources go unused, the Patient Experience Team and Voluntary Services saw an opportunity to reimagine them. With the support of health charity funding secured through a successful Staff Lottery bid, the trolleys have been transformed into something truly special.

Today, the rebranded Digital Library Trolley is a mobile hub of entertainment, comfort and connection. Equipped with 60 lightweight, easy-to-use DVD players, the trolley allows patients to watch films from the comfort of their bed. These portable players, complete with chargers and disposable headphones, can be placed on bedside tables or laps, giving patients autonomy over how they spend their time.

The offering goes far beyond films. Each trolley is stocked with a wide selection of donated DVDs, books, and carefully curated seasonal activity packs. From festive puzzles at Christmas to themed packs during events like the Olympics, there is always something new to engage patients of all ages and interests. Health Charity pens are included as small, thoughtful gifts—simple items that bring a sense of normality and care.

Recognising the diverse needs of patients, the team has also introduced audiobooks, mindfulness cards, and spiritual resources including audio Bibles and Qur’ans. This thoughtful addition ensures the service is inclusive, comforting, and responsive to individual preferences.

At the heart of the initiative are the volunteers. More than simply delivering items, they bring time, conversation and companionship. Visiting wards with the trolley, they chat with patients—especially those who may feel isolated or are staying long-term—helping them choose films, books or activities that suit their interests. For many patients, these visits become something to look forward to, offering a regular moment of human connection.

Voluntary Services Manager, Helena Robertson Reid said, “We are really grateful for the support that the Health Charity have given Voluntary Services which has enabled us to run this project. The items on the library trolley make a huge difference to patient’s experience on the wards and we have a great team of trolley volunteers who really enjoy the role, the teamwork it brings, and the interactions with patients and with staff each week. It’s fantastic to be able to provide this volunteer led service thanks to the Health Charity and our amazing team of trolley volunteers.”

The impact has been profound. Over the past 18 months, more than 1,000 books and 400 activity packs have been distributed, and at any given time, around 28 DVD players are on loan across the hospitals. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Patients often share how the trolley “made their day,” while staff report noticeable improvements in patient wellbeing and experience.

For some, the benefits are deeply personal. The DVD players can also play USB drives, allowing families to share photos and videos with loved ones in hospital. These moments of reminiscence provide comfort, spark memories, and help patients feel connected to home.

The trolleys also promote dignity and flexibility. Items are loaned, regularly checked, cleaned, and carefully managed by volunteers, ensuring they can be reused safely and reach as many patients as possible. As awareness of the service grows, new wards are being assessed and introduced to the initiative, expanding its reach while maintaining infection prevention standards.

This project is a powerful example of how health charity funding can transform an idea into a meaningful, patient-centred service. By repurposing existing resources and investing in digital equipment, the charity has helped create something that not only alleviates boredom but enhances emotional wellbeing, reduces loneliness, and brings moments of joy during difficult times.

Above all, the Digital Library Trolley is about people; patients who feel seen and supported, volunteers who give their time so generously, and donors whose contributions make it all possible. Together, they are helping to turn hospital stays into more humane, connected and compassionate experiences.
