In September 2025, three determined cyclists – Mark Wyatt, Andrew Pearce, and Ryan Emmanuel – took on a 120-mile challenge from Cwmbran to Villa Park, Birmingham, in support of the Prop Appeal at University Hospital Llandough. Their mission? To raise funds and awareness for the incredible work being done to support patients like Ryan’s mum, Beth.
Beth’s story is one of extraordinary resilience. In October 2023, she was suddenly taken seriously ill and transferred to The Harefield Hospital in London, where she suffered a devastating heart attack and was placed on ECMO life support. Against all odds, Beth survived – but her journey was far from over. She faced a stroke, a bleed on the brain, and months of intensive rehabilitation at The Grange Hospital and later at Llandough Hospital.
Though Beth can no longer verbally communicate, her strength, spirit, and determination continue to shine through. Her recovery has been supported by the dedicated team at Llandough, and the Prop Appeal has played a vital role in improving the rehabilitation environment for patients like her.
To say thank you, Ryan, Mark, and Andrew – affectionately known as the South Wales Lions – saddled up for the “Wish I’d Done Some Training” Tour. With rider support from Katie Pearce and Ashley Higgins, they set off on 25th September, battling headwinds and tired legs, but powered by purpose and community spirit.
Day 1: 70 miles to Tewkesbury, including the obligatory Severn Bridge selfie and a dash to catch the Villa match.
Day 2: A tough climb to Birmingham, arriving at Villa Park at 2:15pm – smashing their previous best time and receiving a warm welcome from Matthew Dainty (Supporters Liaison Officer) and Francesco Calvo (President of Business Operations).
Their efforts have not only completed the challenge – they’ve exceeded their fundraising target, raising over £2,500 so far for the Prop Appeal. Every penny will go towards helping others like Beth receive life-changing care and support.
This ride was also in memory of Simon Pearce, and in celebration of the strength of families, communities, and the NHS teams who make recovery possible.
From all of us at Cardiff & Vale Health Charity – thank you to Mark, Andrew, Ryan, Katie, and Ashley. Your dedication, humour, and heart have made a real difference.
