On October 5th, Charlie Hughes will return to the Cardiff Half Marathon, driven by a personal challenge and a meaningful cause.

Charlie, a Senior Communications Officer working on Electronic Prescribing (ePMA), is running in support of Cardiff & Vale Health Charity, the official charity of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. After completing last year’s race in 1 hour and 46 minutes, Charlie is aiming to beat his personal best by finishing in under 1 hour and 40 minutes.

But Charlie’s journey is about more than just time. As a Type 1 diabetic, he faces unique challenges when it comes to endurance sports. Managing his blood sugar levels is a constant priority, especially during training and on race day. “If my sugars are unbalanced, my performance suffers,” Charlie explains. “It’s something I have to monitor closely, but it’s also a big part of why I stay active and focused on my health.”

Charlie’s motivation to run goes beyond personal achievement. He’s passionate about giving back to the NHS colleagues he works alongside and the wider health board that has supported his family. “My parents have received exceptional care from Cardiff and Vale,” he says. “This is my way of saying thank you and supporting the incredible work our teams do every day.”

Training for the half marathon has become part of Charlie’s daily routine. He cycles to work regularly and incorporates long runs into his schedule to build stamina. He also finds inspiration in the electric atmosphere of the Cardiff Half: “The crowd, the cheering, it’s such a great motivator. It really lifts you.”

In true generous spirit, Charlie is also offering an incentive to supporters. Anyone who donates over £5 to his JustGiving page will be entered into a prize draw to win a £50 voucher for Café Citta, one of his favourite local restaurants. “It’s a small way to say thanks to everyone who’s helping me support a cause that means so much.”

Charlie’s determination, resilience, and generosity are what make his journey so inspiring. By supporting him, you’re not only cheering on a personal goal, you’re helping make a difference for patients, families, and NHS staff across Cardiff and Vale.

Support Charlie’s run and donate today via his JustGiving page: Charlie Hughes is fundraising for Cardiff & Vale Health Charity

Let’s help Charlie cross the finish line, stronger, faster, and with purpose.
