Juliet Bright, local gallery owner has set up a Gavin and Stacey themed art exhibition in the heart of Barry, the home of the infamous Gavin & Stacey!
This ‘Crackin’ Exhibition will be supporting Cardiff & Vale Health Charity by donating 20% of all sales, to be directed to the Ophthalmology Clinic at the University Hospital of Wales.
Following a very traumatic visit to the eye clinic recently, Juliet has a very personal reason for raising awareness for eye health and supporting Cardiff & Vale Health Charity, and here is her ‘Glaucoma Story’.
“Hi there! I’m Juliet Bright, and I’m 60 years old. I live in Barry with my husband, Nick. I’m an artist, photographer, and author. I also own a gallery and gift shop called Bright Idea.
“Good eyesight is important to me, and I have glaucoma. My optician diagnosed me with glaucoma in my right eye back in 2017. Every six months, I’d go to the glaucoma clinic at the hospital, until 2022 when the consultant noticed some new damage. Shortly after, I had a laser trabeculoplasty, which was painless and didn’t require any follow-up treatments. But then…
“In March 2025, things took a turn for the worse. I woke up in the middle of the night, in pain. My right eye was hurting, and it hurt even more when I tried to open it. My eye was streaming, and I had lost my vision! I panicked and called 999 for the first time in my life, my husband then rushed me to A&E.
“In the A&E department, they gave me acetazolamide, and my eye stopped watering. The pain went away, and my vision came back blurry. Another dose was given, and my vision was fully restored.
After seeing the UHW ophthalmology clinic, I found out I had acute closed angle glaucoma and that the start of cataract in both my eyes. The cataract in my right eye had even caused the attack. I had no idea I had cataract, but it was new, so this was the first time it was diagnosed.
“I left the UHW feeling confident that I had had, and that I’d get the best medical treatment. In April, I had cataract surgery. It was a quick wait.
“My anaesthetist was Professor Dr. Bazil Ațeleanu, and my surgeon was Wai Siene Ng. They were both amazing! They put me at ease, I didn’t feel any pain, and the procedure was super quick! The next day when I went back for my check-up, I had 20/20 vision and I can’t thank them enough.
“Six weeks later, I had cataract surgery on my left eye and I am so pleased to say I have 20/20 vision in both eyes.
“I believe that the UHW ophthalmology clinic saved my eyesight, and I’ll always be grateful. I cannot thank the medical staff at UHW enough!”
Juliet will be hosting several events at Bright Idea throughout the exhibition run, but in the meantime, ‘I won’t lie to you’ this Exhibition ‘is going to be well lush!’. If you fancy channelling a bit of Gavin and Stacey nostalgia, then “Oh my christ!” pop in and see Juliet and the team at Bright Idea, 4 Broad Street, Barry, CF62 7AA.
