On the 14th May 2021 it is National Operating Department Practitioners day, a day to celebrate the operating department practitioner profession and for colleagues and the public to find out more about the ODP role.   This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating personal and professional diversity’

Staff within the Surgery Clinical Board will mark National ODP Day, with an afternoon of celebration and reflection, thanks to a contribution from the Staff Lottery Fund, requested by Clare Wade, Director of Nursing for the Surgery Clinical Board

Clare said: “The ODP team within the Surgery Clinical Board have amazed me during the Pandemic with their dedication, resilience and teamwork and are our unsung heroes of the pandemic. I would like to use this day to thank them all for working tirelessly to improve COVID-19 care over the last year.  I have personally seen remarkable examples of our ODP workforce going above and beyond giving excellent compassionate care while under considerable pressure. They have supported colleagues and have been very flexible putting themselves forward to work in environments that they would not normally work within such as Critical Care and supporting the MERIT COVID intubation team. Many have moved to work in completely different areas than their usual roles which must have been a huge challenge”.

Barbara Jones, Educational Lead, said “On behalf of the Operating Department Practitioners (ODP’s) within the Perioperative Care environment, “we would like to say a huge thank you to Clare for the recognition and Cardiff & Vale Health Charity, particularly the staff lottery fund for their contribution towards National ODP day, it is greatly appreciated!  We are all very proud to be ODP’s”
