The Media Resources Centre at the University Hospital of Wales has recently received funding to revamp their working environment thanks to Cardiff & Vale Health Charity’s Staff Lottery fund.

Media Resources are responsible for providing a wide range of media-based services to the teaching staff and clinicians at the Health Board, including medical and general photography, clinical video, graphic design and print.

Nicola Kelley-Carrick, Senior Clinical Photographer based at the centre who applied for the funding said: “We wanted to create a new and updated kitchenette and staff room area with new kitchen fixtures and fittings, additional seating and staff locker space.  Our staff room was converted around 10 years ago and as a result was tired and not fit for purpose as our team is a lot bigger now.

“The request for a revamp included new kitchen cupboards for storage and worktop space, a new sink and washing up area, new appliances and a larger table and chairs to seat more staff members.

“There is regularly more than eight members of our team wanting to use the space at once during lunchtimes which was a real struggle and resulted in not enough room for everyone to sit down and take a break.

“We heard about the ‘Staff Lottery fund’ from Peter Welsh, the General Manager of University Hospital Llandough, when he came to visit our department to see if we were happy with our surroundings. He gave us the idea to gather quotes and costings and apply to the fund to improve our staff area.

“The funding from the Health Charity was greatly received by the whole team and without this support we would not have been able to undergo these improvements. Although we could not make the space bigger, careful selection furniture has allowed us to all sit down together for lunch, talk about any issues affecting us, to have meetings around a table in a better environment has really boosted the team’s morale.”
