We are thrilled to present the Mark Things exhibition in memory of Mark Stephens, the healthcare support worker of the Ash Day Unit who passed away in 2021. To celebrate the impact Mark had on everyone around him, the staff and patients of Neuropsychiatry Day Services have created artwork in his memory which showcases their wonderful skills and gives us an insight into the inspiration Mark had spread through his work to patients and colleagues.

“The unexpected passing of our beloved colleague and friend Mark Stephens earlier this year has left the staff and patients within the Neuropsychiatry service completely shocked and saddened. Those who knew him will understand that it is hard to put the impact that Mark had on the service and its patients into words.

We feel so lucky to have had Mark as our healthcare support worker on Ash Day Unit, many have commented that he was the beating heart of Neuropsychiatry Day Services. Mark believed in empowerment, and whether it was pottery sessions, music groups, crosswords, mindfulness moments, or just a listening ear, you couldn’t imagine someone more person-centred than Mark.

The team and patients thought that remembering Mark in a creative way would be very fitting. Thanks to the Hearth Gallery we have been able to showcase creative work from staff and patients in memory of Mark.

The exhibition showcases works created in a variety of mediums, and is a demonstration of the encouraging and inspiring legacy Mark has left behind. This is also a testament to the positive impacts of the creative arts on mental health and wellbeing, and proves how one person can positively affect the lives of so many with their passion for creativity.
