Cardiff & Vale Health Charity is pleased to announce Mark Powell, Facilities Assistant Housekeeper, University Hospital Llandough has been crowned Health Hero for August.

As Facilities Assistant Housekeeper, one of the areas Mark works in is Main Outpatients. This department at UHL is very big and often very busy with clinics running Monday-Friday from 08:00 to 17:00. To put it into perspective, there are over 70 rooms and 8 toilets spread across the unit, a treatment centre, main waiting area, and the many long corridors that connect to the clinics. On average there are a 100 patients seen per day who often bring a relative or carer, as well as the added foot traffic of staff – doctors, nurses, and phlebotomists who work in the department.

In order to have the areas clean and presentable, Mark begins his working day in the early hours. Christine Biddlecombe, Deputy Sister for Main Outpatients said, “Mark is hardworking, cheerful, and takes such pride in his work. Every day the department is absolutely spotless, I really don’t know how he does it! It couldn’t be cleaner if we had a royal visit!”

Whilst working within Main Outpatients, Mark is also responsible for keeping the Lung Function Department clean and tidy, which is another large space. It’s clear that Mark works very hard.

Christine continued to say, “I always thank Mark for his work, and I know all the staff here really appreciate everything he does. He really embodies the core values of the Health Board, particularly ‘Personal Responsibility – be enthusiastic and take responsibility for your work.’ He is an inspiration!”

Sister and Nurse Manager, Debra Woolf said, “During the time I have worked with Mark, he has often gone above and beyond for the department. He can always be relied upon to undertake all tasks efficiently and takes great pride in all he does. He is a very valued and respected member of our team.”

When speaking of this nomination, Facilities Team Manager, Michael Ryan said, “Mark is an asset to our team. We are so proud of him, he works to a very high standard and covers a large area. He’s liked by all!”

Mark will be Health Hero for the month of August and will receive a treat from sponsors Park Plaza Cardiff. He is delighted with the award nomination.
