In October 2023, Ryan’s mum Beth suddenly became seriously ill. She was rushed to hospital and, within a day, transferred to The Harefield Hospital in London—a specialist heart centre—where she suffered a devastating heart attack and had to be resuscitated. Beth was placed on ECMO life support and sedated, and for weeks her family stood by her side, uncertain of what the future would hold.
Thanks to the incredible medical team and the life-saving ECMO machine, Beth pulled through. But her journey was far from over. She suffered a stroke that caused a bleed on the brain. Despite these immense challenges, Beth’s strength and determination never wavered.
Beth was later transferred to the ICU at the Grange Hospital in Newport, and then to the rehabilitation centre at University Hospital Llandough in Cardiff. There, she underwent intensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Although Beth is no longer able to verbally communicate, her family has found new ways to connect with her—and she continues to show her vibrant spirit every day.
Her recovery has been supported by the dedicated team at Llandough Hospital, and her family is incredibly grateful for the care she has received.
In September 2025, three members of the South Wales Lions—Ryan “Are we there yet?” Emmanuel, Mark ‘Cavendish’ Wyatt, and Andrew ‘Can I use an e-bike?” Pearce—will cycle 120 miles from Cwmbran to Villa Park in Birmingham.
They ride in memory of Simon Pearce, and in support of Ryan’s mum Beth and her family, who have been helped by the Prop Appeal.
