In December 2020, Cardiff & Vale Health Charity celebrated 10 years of making things better for patients, visitors, staff and the wider community.

The Health Charity had planned to hold a 10 year celebration event, looking back at the major projects it has funded and celebrating the contributions of their donors, fundraisers, volunteers and community partners during the past decade.  Unfortunately, due to Coronavirus these plans were cancelled.  Instead, the Health Charity will be taking a look back at how its fundraisers, donors, volunteers and community partners have helped to change things for the better over the past ten years.

Here are just some of the activities and events held by the Health Charity, supporters and fundraisers in 2015.

May

Staff from Anaesthetics and Recovery, in the Short Stay Surgical Unit at UHW took part in a running event to raise money for their unit. The team completed the 6th Cardiff 2KM event on Bank Holiday Monday for their department and the event also helped to increase staff morale as part of a team building event.

June

Rhys Howlett, Lloyds Bank Charity Champion and his colleagues completed the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge on 27 June to raise money for the PROP Appeal.

Rhys and the team had previously helped with fundraising and charity events, taking part in the Lloyds Bank Cardiff Half Marathon to raise money for the PROP Appeal and by also taking part in the Lloyds Bank Day to Make a Difference where the mortgage team from Cardiff went along with their Manager Claire Ellison and donated their day to Rookwood Hospital on the 28th May where they revamped a patient area.

Rhys said: “I was fortunate enough to be part of a group who ran the Three Peaks to raise money for PROP Appeal some years ago. I also ran the Cardiff Half Marathon in the same year to raise money for PROP – an appeal that I felt proud to support.”

October

More than 40 staff members ran the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise funds for Cardiff and Vale UHB wards and departments.

Charity Band Day was held in support of the Better Life Appeal which raised £4,271.15!!! It was the busiest Band Day we’ve had to date with the money going to The Better Life Appeal at University Hospital Llandough, in aid of those suffering from Cystic Fibrosis. November

Ladies night for The Breast Centre – Ladies from Cardiff and the surrounding areas had a real treat at a fundraising event held at Whitchurch Rugby Club. More than 150 ladies danced the night away and were entertained by Jolene Dover, a wonderful drag act.
Several local businesses supported the evening by donating raffle prizes, raising a fantastic £1,000 for the Breast Centre Appeal at Cardiff & Vale Health Charity and £200 to Coppafeel, the breast cancer awareness charity.

The event was organised by Sophie Gape to say a big heartfelt thank you to the Breast Centre at University Hospital Llandough. She also wanted to support their work after they helped her Mum, Christine Murrell, through her breast cancer treatment.

December

Staff from the Emergency Unit at UHW and Welsh Ambulance Service held a Christmas Fete at the Sports and Social Recreational Hall, UHW. With Santa in attendance and mince pies-a-plenty, lots of fun was had by all.  Funds raised were for making improvements in the Paediatric Emergency Unit.

University Hospital Llandough 1km Fun Run and 5km event was held in the hospital grounds – with runners taking on circuits of the hospital! The event held with Bertha’s Army, raised money for the Better Life Appeal for adults with Cystic Fibrosis.
