Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (now known as the African Union) on this day, 25 May, in 1963.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has a coordinating group which manages and supports partnership working in relation to the commitment to Wales and Africa programme.

A number of Health Board staff, and associated colleagues from Cardiff University, are also involved with charities that support work in Africa. These partnerships include Mothers of Africa, Life for African Mothers, Penarth and District Lesotho Trust and the Welsh Government’s International Learning Opportunities Programme.

Through these initiatives, sharing skills across the continent, establishing positive collaborative working relationships with African communities and contributing to education and health, these charities in Wales are helping to make an impact on communities in Africa.  This work demonstrates the Health Board’s commitment to making a positive contribution to global wellbeing.

A team from Cardiff and Vale UHB use shared knowledge, skills and experience to assist staff at the children’s hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone to support the care of children with cancer.

To contribute to the Health Board’s ongoing work at the Ola During Hospital in Sierra Leone join the Cardiff & Vale Health Charity’s ‘In For a Penny’ scheme, where you can donate the end of your pay each month to help make a difference visit: https://cavuhb.nhs.wales/files/wale-for-africa/jc-edit-new-form-in-for-a-penny-june-2019-pdf/
