Hats off and congratulations to #TeamHealthCharity Bevan, Lauren, Kim, Mike & Mike, Michelle, John, and Philip for completing the incredible 10yFan challenge!

For those unfamiliar, 10yFan is a challenge to climb to the summit of Pen y Fan and back up to 10 times within 24 hours. To put that into perspective, Pen y Fan stands at 2,907 feet, and Everest reaches 29,029 feet. Completing the 10YFan challenge is like climbing Everest!

10yFan is a true test of fitness, determination, willpower, and teamwork.  Many of our team of 8 are colleagues at Cardiff and Vale UHB, and some are long time supporters of Cardiff & Vale Health Charity.  Every one of them has their own reasons for supporting us, and their own personal stories to tell.

As a child, Graduate Management Trainee Bevan was a patient in the Children’s Hospital of Wales. He said, “I had a brain clot and was in hospital for six weeks. That experience with the nurses and doctors was incredible and that’s why I want to give back. My family have worked in the NHS and I have seen the great work Cardiff & Vale Health Charity do for patients and staff.”  Bevan chose to raise money for our Make It Better Appeal.

Ten years ago, Michelle’s daughter Martha was born with a ‘dancing heart’.  She said “We committed to raising £1million in our lifetime and this year we will get to well over £100,000 raised in her name as her living legacy for the Martha’s Dancing Heart fund. The 10yFan challenge seemed perfect to celebrate our own 10 year anniversary”

Mike & Mike, the father and son duo, both employees of CAV UHB, and long-time charity supporters thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, which was not their first time!  They have smashed their fundraising and have chosen to support the Health Meadow fund at UHL.

John, staff member at Y Gegin at UHW summed up the whole experience, “It’s been fab being part of the Health Charity and lovely to meet the others in the team. We smashed it!

“What a weekend, the event itself is well organised and run by a fantastic group of volunteers who are always supportive, friendly and a great morale booster when you need it! The comradery on the day is superb.  My second time and my second 10, so I’m very happy with that.

“Well done to all the team behind the scenes and out up front.”

Saving the best until last – this incredible team of eight has raised over £6,300 so far, and the total is still climbing!
