The family of a patient who received treatment on the Haematology Department at University Hospital of Wales have raised over £3,828.75 for the department via Cardiff & Vale Health Charity.
Gaynor Wilkins, a retired primary school teacher affectionately known as Beti to the staff on the Haematology Department, was diagnosed with an incurable and rare form of blood cancer called Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in January 2018.
The Haematology Department at the University Hospital of Wales became a second home to Gaynor. The meticulous care and friendly support she received undoubtedly contributed to her remarkable quality of life living with blood cancer for over two and half years.
Gaynor was always smiling. Even after the shock of her diagnosis, her smile still shone as she lived with her aggressive illness. Her positive attitude to life was infectious and admirable. At 74 years of age, Gaynor sadly passed away suddenly on August 31st 2020, a month after Gaynor and her husband celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on the 25th July 2020.
Gaynor’s daughter Rhiannon said “In recognition of the excellent care and treatment provided by all staff throughout her illness, we wish to raise donations in memory of our beautiful Mam and wife, to assist others facing similar experiences”.
We at Cardiff & Vale Health Charity very much appreciate this act of kindness and on behalf of all the NHS teams here in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, we thank Rhiannon and the rest of her family from the bottom of our hearts for their inspiring kindness and generosity once again.
